Dr. William Acton: Victorian Obstetrician And Advocate For Female Health
Dr. William Acton (1813-1875) was a prominent Victorian obstetrician and gynecologist who made significant contributions to the field. His most notable work was “The Functions and Disorders of the Reproductive Organs in Childhood, Youth, Adult Age, and Advanced Life, Considered in their Physiological, Social, and Moral Relations” (1856), regarded as the most comprehensive study of female sexuality at the time. Acton’s emphasis on sexual health and his advocacy for women’s rights and autonomy earned him both praise and condemnation.
