Mrigal Carp: Vulnerable Freshwater Fish In South Asia
Cirrhinus mrigala, commonly known as Mrigal carp, belongs to the Cyprinidae family and is found in freshwater habitats of South and Southeast Asia. It has an elongated body covered in silvery scales, and prominent barbels around its mouth. Mrigal carps are omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants, insects, and small fish. They play a vital role in the riverine ecosystem and are extensively cultivated in aquaculture due to their meat quality and fast growth rate. However, threats like habitat loss and overfishing have led to their conservation status being listed as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN.
